AbdulKadir Kure University is a state-owned state university that is located in Minna, a major city in Niger State, and also serves as the capital city of the state. The institution is named after Abdulkadir Kure, who served as the former governor of Niger State for eight years before his death in 2017.
Abdulkadir Kure University was not started as a university, though it began as a College of Education with a plan by the former Governor of Niger State, Muazu Babangida, to upgrade the institution to a University of Education, but this did not come through until 2023, when the institution was granted approval by the National Universities Commission (NUC) to operate as a university, hence renaming the institution as Niger State University of Education.
In 2023, following the university’s creation as the University of Education, Governor Bago of Niger State wrote a letter to the State Assembly, the National Universities Commission (NUC) and JAMB for the institution to be named Abdulkadir Kure University in honour of the previous governor for his work in Niger State, and this request was approved.
The institution was upgraded to a conventional university in 2024 by the National Universities Commission (NUC) to operate as a conventional university rather than the former University of Education, meaning the institution can now offer a Certificate in B.Sc. instead of dedicated education courses.
