Waziri Umaru Federal Polytechnic was established as Sokoto State College of Technology based on the edict of 1976. In the year 1976, the institution took off in 1977, which was the year after the edict was passed, recognising the establishment of the institution.
As of the time of establishment of the Polytechnic, the institution site was located at Farfaru in Sokoto State, serving as a temporary site until 1980, when the site was moved to Birnin Kebbi, and this has been serving as the Polytechnic’s permanent site since then.
In 1980 the institution was upgraded from the status of college to polytechnic; hence, the name was changed to the Polytechnic of Sokoto State. However, in 1991, with the creation of Kebbi State, ownership of the institution was handed to the new state; hence, the name of the polytechnic was changed to The Polytechnic, Birnin Kebbi.
The institution name was changed from the Polytechnic, Birnin Kebbi, to Waziri Umaru Polytechnic in honour of Waziri Umaru, who was a respected traditional ruler and statesman of Gwadu.
