Umaru Ali Shinkafi Polytechnic was a university that was birthed as a result of the creation of Zamafra and Birnin Kebbi State from Sokoto State, making the state lose some of its education institutions to the newly created state, and it was this that led to the establishment of Umaru Ali Shinkafi Polytechnic in 2002.
In 2002, the newly established Polytechnic Haliru Binji College of Art and Science and Sani Abacha College of Administration were merged together and upgraded based on the law of the 2002 Sokoto State House Assembly to form the newly created Umaru Ali Shinkafi Polytechnic.
Umaru Ali Shinkafi Polytechnic was not initially established and named as Umaru Ali Skinafi Polytechnic but the Polytechnic of Sokoto State, but the name that took a change was a result of the renaming of the Polytechnic in honour of Umaru Ali Skinafi, Federal Commissioner for Internal Affairs, in 2016.
